In October 1883 Edith Nesbit (1858-1924) and Hubert Bland (1855-1914) decided to form a socialist debating group with their Quaker friend Edward Pease (1857-1955). The Board of Trade statistician George Henry Wood (1874-1945) was the Secretary of the Huddersfield and District Woollen Manufacturers and Spinners Association from 1907. He was a free thinker and associate of A. L. Bowley, who read widely and was active in a variety of local radical movements.
